CONvergence Cosplay Bingo Board Episode 2: Attack of the Cosplay Bingo Board.

May 21, 2012

Last year I went to CONvergence to tell some jokes at some shows, help out with a room party and drink myself into an ulcer (true story!). A week before the convention I came up with the idea of a cosplay bingo board. The rules were simple. See the costume, check the box.

People got “bingo” in fifteen minutes walking around. The name of the game last year was coverall.

A friend printed up a bunch of them and delivered them to the Stand Up! Records party room and we distributed them freely. They were gone within a couple of hours. People seemed to like it.

This year we’re bringing the bingo board back but bigger, bolder and badder (I don’t know what happened there. I just started alliterating)! I’ll actually take some time to make it a little easier on the eyes (i.e. more than just a screengrab of a spreadsheet) and I’m hoping to do multiple versions of the board to make it more like actual bingo. This is where I need your help.

Leave a comment below with an idea for a convergence cosplay bingo board square. We’ll be using some of the squares from last year and I’ll come up with some more on my own but I’m looking to make enough for multiple boards. The only rule here is to not be a dick. I ain’t throwing any “guy who obviously lives with his mom” squares on the board. We want to make something everybody can play and I’d rather not piss anybody off or make them feel bad (except furries. They’re fair game).

With that one rule in mind, be creative! The biggest complaint last year is that the board was too easy to fill so please feel free to do something obscure or a combination (Star Trek character hanging out with Star Wars character).

Let’s get started. I look forward to seeing your comments!

Off the top of my head:

-Not sure how best to word the square, but mashup costumes? (Star Trek character in steampunk style, or vampire in Firefly, etc.)
-Inappropriately sexy costumes (different from Unnecessarily sexy) like a sexy Freddy Krueger or such.
-Gender bending costumes (reverse gender super heroes, chicks as Doctor Who, etc.)
-Something with kids in costumes… but they’re all over the place, this needs to be refined to more specific options. Kids in costumes that are specifically coordinated with the accompanying adult costume?

Kid accessory! Where a kid is used as part of an adult’s costume!

Hey one year my friend and I were characters from a book and the scene we did involved one leading the other on a leash. The outfits were iconic enough that we had made it a game to see how many people recognized it.

        As far as suggestions:
        Hunger Games
Racebending (black Katara, Asian Belle etc)
Nolanverse character not from a movie (Harley, Penguin, Ivy)
costume broken before the day is half over
        meme costume
TOO SOON (My boyfriend was Billy Mays that one year)

    Kilted stormtrooper.
    Fem Doctor Who.
Costume that can’t fit through doors.

Is “Kilted Stormtrooper” something that actually happens? I don’t think I’ve seen it but if you’ve seen it more than once it’s going on the board.

Something involving the overwhelming number of Buddy Christs. There used to be just one (my friend Scott) and then each year since they multiply like Tribbles.

And now I want to make tribbles, dress them up as buddy christ and leave them all over the con.

Multiple Jesuses (Jesii?) can totally go on

Rich Kronfeld in his Captain Pike chair
Half-assed furry with just a tail and ears
Adult man wearing a My Little Pony t-shirt
    Father/son and/or mother/daughter costumes
    Stanley H. Tweedle from Lexx
Redhead wearing the Princess Leia slave bikini
Man wearing the Princess Leia slave bikini
    Any Ghostbuster
    Jareth from Labyrinth

Awesome! I was already thinking (and Eric commented) about a gender bender category so we may just go with “Gender Bender Male (man in female costume)” and vice versa. So the man in slave leia bikini might be too specific but the rest are great!

Thanks! Yeah, I think Eric and I were composing at the same time. I like his gender bender idea too!

Attack of the faux fur: random animal bits like fuzzy leggings, a tail or ears

Cunning, Don’t you think? A Jayne hat with no Jayne costume.

Oh for cute! : child versions of characters that aren’t children

Is there a Doctor in the Con?: Any version of Doctor Who (bonus if there are multiple versions together)

Playing on a theme: a costume based on a character with directly representing that character. Example: Dalek Skirt, Gir hoodie

These looked hot on the shelf: any ‘sexy’ outfit/costume in a state of half off. (carrying sexy shoes, undone corset…) bonus points if you removed part of someelse’s

The Wayback Machine: classic versions of thing. Like 70’s battlestar

I’m on my tablet so it was difficult for me to see the original grid so there may be some repeats.

    Costume with electronic/lightup parts
Costume that has nothing to do with scifi/fantasy/comicbooks
Multiples of the same costume not planned together (2 supermans run into each other)
    A herd of hobbits
Girl wearing anime costume who looks 15, but should be 18 to wear it.
    Superman with plastic hair
    A gaggle of Avengers

1)Painted NERF gun as a costume prop.

2)Someone wearing bondage accessories that obviously has no idea they’re wearing BDSM gear (soccer mom in a dog collar, 13 year-old in bondage pants)

    3) Creepy older dude hitting on a younger girl

    4) Ridiculously unnecessary peacebonding of something that is clearly not a weapon. “Overzealous peacebonding”

    5) A comedian/nanny

    6) Ironic T-Shirt/wearer combinations (fat guy in a flash shirt, etc)

    7) Young, awkward teens hooking up/inappropriate public make-outs

    8) “Tiny Top-Hat”

    9) Waldo

    10) A furry with “access panels” built into their costume

    11) Inappropriate dental floss-style bikini

Nick, items like 3 and 7 are items for a general con bingo but not actually cosplay bingo. Yes, I’m being pedantic. Take a drink.

Anything made out of cardboard, weather it be part of costume, prop or any random item.

Maybe someone will be inspired in their own submissions; or improve upon what I submit:

    The Goblin King
    Side-boob (male or female)
Inappropriate drinking vessel (Yahtzee cup, baby bottle, enemy’s skull…)
    Out-of-character personal backpack/purse
“Sustainable” grocery bag used for shopping/personal items
    Loner sketching in the corner
    Blacklight bodypaint
    More-than-necessary sequins!
    Dieselpunk
Person who sneaks purse-dog into hotel as “service animal”
    Photog-nerd using the “Dutch Angle”

I will probably submit even more later. Because this is an hilarious idea.

There should be a card just for Wonder Woman!
    Gender bender Wonder woman,
Wonder Woman with EVEN LESS clothing,
    fully covered Wonder Woman,
    Time travel Wonder Woman,
    little kid Wonder Woman,
    Wonder Woman with group,
    Wonder Woman alone,
various actions seen done by Wonder Woman (tying someone up with lasso, fighting a DC villian, fighting a Marvel villian, fighting a non-comic book villian, romancing Batman, romancing Superman, romancing someone else).

‘Concept’ costume with a prepared explanation longer than one sentence.
